Lumber isn’t just one type of wood. There are different variants within the lumber category and they are all used for different purposes. When using lumber for projects, make sure that you get the right type of lumber for your purpose. Today, we will have a look at the different types of lumber and what they can be used for.

The two main types of lumber are hardwood and softwood and they can be used for different purposes.

Softwood Lumber

Softwood comes from trees that we call coniferous which means they are evergreens and do not lose their leaves. Examples are pine trees, fir trees, cedar trees, and poplar trees.

Pine Lumber – This type of wood can be used to make furniture or in construction. It is a relatively inexpensive option and is easy to find. The choice of pine lumber will be determined by what you want to do. Some pines are harder and stronger and good for use in construction, while others are softer and are better suited to furniture making.

Poplar Lumber – Poplar is the hardest of the softwoods and is used in cabinet making and other furniture. It can be easily stained or painted and even used for ceiling moldings. It gets scratched and damaged easily.

Cedar Lumber – Cedar is a strong wood that is naturally resistant to bugs, rotting, and water. It can be used in both construction and furniture. It is often used for fencing, saunas, boats, and even shingles because it won’t crack.

Hardwood Lumber

Hardwood comes from trees that we call deciduous which means that they shed their leaves. Hardwood includes maple, oak, mahogany, cherry, and teak.

Oak Lumber – There are two types of oak: red oak and white oak. Red oak grows fast and is less costly than white oak. White oak is one of the hardest woods you can find and even require special saws and equipment to process. Most antique furniture that is heavy, solid, and very expensive is made from white oak.

Birch Lumber – This is a very versatile type of lumber and can be used for making furniture, cabinets, and even more fancy and high-end furniture.

Lumber is versatile and can be used for a variety of purposes. They key is to use the right type for the right project to ensure success and longevity of your product.
